Social media has evolved A LOT over the last decade, with perhaps the biggest change being the networks' swift and collective pivot to video. And while many brands now prioritize this content for greater reach with a wide audience, they can still build highly engaged niche communities using old-reliable tactics like sharing static posts with smart hashtags.
Our clients often ask us if they should participate in hashtag holidays or sit them out. We always say that the answer depends on your core values, subject matter expertise, audience and the passion points you share. (And we always ask: Are you doing it just for boosted engagement or to contribute to real community conversation? If it's the former, then don't participate.)
If you've decided that a hashtag holiday is relevant to your brand, plan out your content with intention and offer up something valuable to your audience. If you're a nonprofit organization, consider showcasing new insights on a topic from one of your experts in the field. For a CPG brand, it could mean a discount or even a giveaway. For a travel brand or destination, it could be a behind-the-scenes tour of an iconic site or historical landmark.
Check out our curated rundown of best hashtag holidays for building community, plus a few of Team Bond's personal picks – of course they involve our favorite things: kindness, surfing, coffee and dogs.
